BCCI extends sponsorship deal with Sahara

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The Indian board has extended by six months its current contract with Sahara India to sponsor the national team after its inability to find any alternative sponsors. N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, said the extension was granted on the basis of the present terms and conditions by the marketing committee, headed by the president Shashank Manohar.

“A fresh tender will be issued, before the expiry of the extension period, inviting bids for the team sponsorhip,” Srinivasan said.

Sahara’s contract was to have ended on December 31 this year, and had already been extended by three months.

Reports indicate that one stumbling block in finding a new sponsor was the base price the BCCI deemed fit for the deal. While the previous contract with Sahara was a four-year-deal signed in 2006 for Rs 400 crore, the BCCI is now asking companies to top that and fork out around $35 million (about Rs 162 crore) annually.

The board also awarded the title and ground rights for the two Twenty20 internationals against Sri Lanka to WSG at Rs 3.15 crore per match.

The BCCI also said that any party that strikes a deal with it for the IPL, will have to submit a bank guarantee for the full value of the deal with immediate effect. This includes Multi Screen Media, for IPL telecast rights, and Entertainment Sports Direct (ESD), which won the IPL theatrical rights.

Gibbs to miss South Africa’s opening game

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Herschelle Gibbs, the South Africa opener, will miss the opening game of the Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka on September 22 because of a rib injury but is likely to recover in time for the rest of the games.

Gibbs picked up the injury during the warm-up gameagainst West Indies on Friday after he took evasive action at the non-striker’s end to avoid a straight drive from Graeme Smith. He retired hurt after scoring a 40-ball 38.

“Herschelle suffered a minor rib and intercostal injury in the warm-up match against the West Indies at Potchefstroom on Friday,” Brandon Jackson, the South African physiotherapist said.

“We will reassess his position after Tuesday’s match with the aim of getting him back on the field either for the New Zealand match on Thursday or the one against England next Sunday.”

Younis ruled out of opening match

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Pakistan captain Younis Khan has been ruled out of the team’s opening match of the Champions Trophy, against West Indies in Johannesburg on Wednesday, after suffering a hairline fracture on the little finger of his right hand. He picked up the injury while fielding in Pakistan’s first warm-up match against Sri Lanka on Friday in Benoni, when he and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal went for a catch in the slips.

Shahid Afridi will lead the side in his absence and Younis will start batting from tomorrow in the hope of being fit for Pakistan’s next game, against India in Centurion on Saturday.

Pakistan manager Yawar Saeed, who had initially played down the seriousness of the injury, had a different version to give after Younis went for a fresh X-ray on Monday. “Younis will decide himself on Tuesday after having nets whether he can play the first match,” Yawar said. “But even if he does not play against West Indies he will be fit in time for the big game against India on the 26.”

Younis, 31, had earlier suffered a minor fracture on his little finger during a training session on Friday, but had downplayed the injury. “It’s a little fracture. Nothing serious,” he had said. “We will assess it on Monday. Hopefully it should be alright.”

Thushara, Murali fashion strong win

Monday, August 24th, 2009

With the rain clouds staying away and the Galle sky clear, Sri Lanka romped to victory in the first Test, finishing off proceedings mid-afternoon. The New Zealand tail offered far more resistance than the top order – Daniel Vettori led the way with a brave 67 – but with the spinners coming into their own after early breakthroughs from Thilan Thushara, Sri Lanka eased to a 202-run win. Fittingly Muttiah Muralitharan, who had taken his 100th wicket in Galle earlier in the match, had the final say, running out Brendon McCullum with a superb throw from mid-off to finish off proceedings.

Any realistic hopes that New Zealand had of survival had disappeared soon after lunch, when Jesse Ryder edged Murali behind. McCullum and Vettori staved off the inevitable for a while, and there was polite applause for Vettori when he reached his half-century. Two neat pulls for four off Thushara followed, but by then both Murali and Ajantha Mendis were turning the ball at wicked angles.

And it was Mendis who delivered, coming round the wicket and turning one sharply away to take the edge of Vettori’s bat. Once again Prasanna Jayawardene’s glovework was smooth, and as Vettori walked back, it was only a matter of when Sri Lanka would wrap things up. McCullum swung Murali for a six, and then swept him for four to rage against dying light, and there were a couple of lovely drives too from Jeetan Patel. But after Mendis had seen him dropped by Malinda Warnapura, substituting for Angelo Mathews, at short leg, Murali struck, with the doosra luring him forward and Prasanna doing the rest.

Iain O’Brien went caught at silly point off the inside edge, and McCullum then made the mistake of taking on Murali’s throwing arm to end the contest. The damage, though, had been done much earlier, as Sri Lanka started the morning with some exceptionally tidy overs. The pressure eventually told once Thushara switched the angle of attack to round the wicket. Martin Guptill was clueless against one that came in with the arm and then darted away to clip the top of off stump. Soon after, Tim McIntosh, perhaps still suffering the after-effects of illness, was squared up, and Thilan Samaraweera took a fine low catch at third slip. McIntosh waited for the third umpire’s decision, but had to walk off eventually.

An even heftier blow came soon after. Kumar Sangakkara threw the ball to his predecessor as captain, and when Mahela Jayawardene got Ross Taylor to tickle on into Prasanna’s hands down the leg side, the Lankan celebrations were raucous. Up in the dressing room, Trevor Bayliss, the coach, held his head in his hands in disbelief.

With the fields more attacking, both Vettori and Jacob Oram had the opportunity to play some strokes. Vettori played a couple of lovely drives, and the sweep and pull were also employed by both as the scoreboard ticked along. But just when it seemed that they might get to lunch without further damage, Oram tried to sweep a straighter one from Mendis, and missed.

Both Vettori and Ryder saw edges off Murali evade wicketkeeper and slip and go for four, but there was to be no great escape for New Zealand. Sri Lanka, whose home form is the envy of so many, chipped away relentlessly and with Thushara adding a cutting edge to the wiles of Murali and Mendis, victory was as inevitable as it was emphatic.

Mahela, Dilshan lead SL charge

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Sri Lankas Mahela Jayawardene scored an undefeated century as the hosts reached 293 for three at stumps on the first day of the first Test against New Zealand on Tuesday. The 32-year-old right-hander shared big partnerships with Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thilan Samaraweera to pile up 108 from 217 deliveries, including 14 boundaries . The former captains century, the 26th of his 106-match Test career, steered the hosts into a commanding position as New Zealands decision to bowl first backfired.
Dilshan, promoted to the openers berth on his return to international cricket after a finger injury, struck 12 fours and one six in an entertaining 92 from 72 balls. The pair rescued the hosts from a dreadful start, sharing a 118-run stand for the third wicket . Middle-order batsman Samaraweera carried on where Dilshan left off, stroking 82 from 167 balls with 11 boundaries during an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership that has reached 159 runs in 50.5 overs.
Chris Martin, the best of the seamers with two for 59, gave the tourists an early advantage after they won the toss on an overcast morning and quickly reduced Sri Lanka to 16 for two. Left-hander Tharanga Paranavitana edged a perfectly-pitched outswinger to be dismissed for a duck while skipper Kumar Sangakkara chipped a catch straight to square leg.

I have been ignored for poor form: Irfan

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Off-colour pacer Irfan Pathan conceded he hasnt performed well enough to merit selection in the Indian One-day team but vowed to make a comeback, saying he has age on his side.
Talking to reporters with elder brother Yusuf by his side at a promotional event here this afternoon, the 24-year-old junior Pathan said, I have been ignored purely on the basis of my drop in performance and I am working hard towards it.
Irfan, however, said it was disappointing to be ignored for next months Tri-series in Sri Lanka and the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa. For the last six years, if I have done slightly bad, Im getting dropped. But I dont have any excuse. Im not a person who runs for an excuse .
Its very simple, if I am dropped then something is wrong somewhere . Reason is always performance … Obviously the selectors felt, Im not up to the mark so Ive to work hard and go to that level, Irfan said.
However, the pacer, who made it to the top earlier than his elder brother Yusuf, said he has age by his side. Not many people have achieved what Ive at at the age of 23-24 and I am very happy for that.
Irfan also rubbished suggestions that his increased focus on batting had affected his bowling. I dont think it has affected my bowling. At junior level for Baroda, I have batted at No. 3 and 4 positions, so I dont think it is an issue.
On the controversial whereabouts clause in WADA that has been rejected by the Indian cricketers and the board, Irfan said, I dont think anybody is against WADA… We (all the sportpersons) strongly condemn doping. The Board is sorting out the matter.
Asked whether he would like to take some tips from Wasim Akram, who has praised him in the past, Irfan said, Im really thankful to him. But we will remain busy with the domestic season beginning September . But when I get a chance, I would speak to him.

Kambli retires from international cricket

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Indian crickets spoilt child has finally called it quits. Vinod Kambli , who last played an ODI in 2000 against Sri Lanka at Sharjah, and in a Test back in 1995 against New Zealand at Cuttack, has decided to end his international career .
Kambli made the announcement while launching his sports academy at Vikhroli, in the presence of coach Ramakant Achrekar and former India captain Ajit Wadekar. Kambli had invited childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar too, but the latter could not make it.
Kambli has, however, admitted that he is still available for domestic cricket. Kambli last played first-class cricket in 2004-05 . Kambli made his ODI debut in 1991 and played 104 ODIs overall, scoring 2,477 runs. He made 1,084 runs from 16 Tests, with four centuries. After an explosive start at the international level, with two double hundreds on the trot and two centuries in his first seven Tests, Kambli floundered, with the West Indian quicks exposing his weakness against the short ball in 1994.
Kambli made as many as nine comebacks, but failed to cement a place. He played his last Test even before turning 24.
